YouTube $20 Payout Threshold Test: Who Gets It and Why

YouTube $20 Payout Threshold Test: Who Gets It and Why

Updated: November 6, 2026

YouTube is testing a lower payout threshold: some monetized creators can now cash out at $20 instead of $100. The test started with October 2026 payments and covers a randomly selected group of creators in the US, India and Indonesia. It doesn't change who can join the YouTube Partner Program or how much you earn. It only changes how soon you can get the money you have already made.

What YouTube is testing

Until now, YouTube creators paid through AdSense for YouTube had to build up $100 (or the local equivalent) before a payment was sent. In the test, that minimum drops to $20. Social Media Today reported on October 27 that YouTube described it as "temporarily running an experiment", and that earnings below the threshold simply roll over to the next month.

Tubefilter quoted YouTube's experiments page: the change applies "starting from October 2026 payments for a randomly selected group of creators." Tubefilter also linked the choice of India and Indonesia to the weak rupee and rupiah, where the $80 difference is a bigger deal for a small channel.

Who is in the test

You can't sign up for it. YouTube picked creators at random, and only in three countries:

  • United States
  • India
  • Indonesia

Creators in the test get a notification and can follow their payment activity in YouTube Studio on mobile. If you live elsewhere, or you didn't get a notification, your threshold is still the standard one. YouTube hasn't said whether the test will expand or become permanent.

How YouTube payments work, in short

The threshold is only one step. According to YouTube's AdSense for YouTube help page:

  • Your finalized earnings for a month are added to your balance between the 7th and the 12th of the following month.
  • Once your balance passes the verification threshold, Google mails a PIN to your address. You have to enter it before you can be paid. Some countries also require identity verification first.
  • When your balance reaches the payment threshold and there are no holds, you should be paid by the 21st or the 26th of the month.

So a lower threshold helps only if your address, identity and payment method are already set up. If your PIN is still in the mail, a $20 threshold won't speed anything up.

How to check or change your threshold

The threshold lives in your AdSense account, not in YouTube Studio. Google's AdSense help lists the steps:

  1. Sign in to AdSense.
  2. Go to Payments, then Payments info.
  3. Click Manage settings.
  4. Click the edit icon next to the payment schedule.
  5. Enter the amount you want and save.

You can only set a threshold higher than the default, and you can't change how often you are paid. If you are in the test and prefer fewer, larger payments (for example, to cut bank fees), raise it here.

What it means for small channels

For a channel earning $30 to $60 a month, the old $100 minimum meant waiting two or three months for each payment. At $20, the same channel could be paid every month. That's better for cash flow, especially if you reinvest in equipment, editing or promotion.

Two things stay the same. You still need to be in the YouTube Partner Program to earn ad revenue, and entry is getting harder: we covered the new rules in our post on YouTube monetization requirements for 2027. And your earnings per view don't change at all. The test gets you paid sooner; it doesn't pay you more.

An example: $100 vs. $20 threshold

Here is a simple example with made-up numbers. Say a channel earns $35 in October, $40 in November and $30 in December.

  • With a $100 threshold: the balance is $35 after October, $75 after November and $105 after December. The first payment arrives in January, for all three months together.
  • With a $20 threshold: each month's earnings pass $20 on their own, so the channel is paid in November, December and January, one month at a time.

The total is the same $105 in both cases. The only difference is how long the money waits in your balance.

If you use an SMM panel

A faster payout makes it tempting to push for monetization quickly. Here is how to use panel services without hurting your channel:

Use panel services to support videos that already work

Views and likes from a panel help most on a video that already keeps viewers watching. They give it an early push so real viewers take it seriously. On a weak video they mostly add numbers to a page nobody stays on.

Understand what watch-time services can and can't do

Watch-time and subscriber services are often bought to get closer to Partner Program thresholds. YouTube reviews channels before approving them and only counts "qualified" watch hours and views, so no panel can guarantee approval. Our SMM panel guide to YouTube monetization explains the math, the delivery timelines and the risks before you order anything.

Order gradually

A channel that gains 5,000 views in an hour while its other videos get 40 looks unnatural. Spread orders over days with drip-feed, and keep the numbers in proportion to your normal traffic. Our guide to buying 1,000 YouTube views shows realistic delivery speeds and prices.

Prefer services with refill

Some purchased views and subscribers drop over time. Services with a refill window replace part of that drop, so your counts stay steady while you keep growing organically.

Don't count panel traffic as income

Ad revenue depends on real viewers who watch ads. Panel views can make a video look more popular, but don't plan your budget on them turning into payouts.

FAQ

Can I join YouTube's $20 payout test?

No. YouTube chose creators at random in the US, India and Indonesia. If you are in the test, you get a notification.

Does the $20 threshold change YouTube Partner Program requirements?

No. You still need to meet the Partner Program requirements and be approved before you earn ad revenue. The test only affects when the money you have earned is paid out.

What happens to earnings under $20?

They roll over to the next month and are added to your balance until you reach the threshold.

Can I lower my AdSense threshold myself?

No. In AdSense you can only raise the threshold above the default. A lower default only applies if YouTube puts your account in the test.

When will I get paid if I reach $20?

If your balance reaches the threshold and there are no holds, YouTube says you should be paid by the 21st or 26th of the following month, after earnings are finalized between the 7th and 12th.

Will this test come to other countries?

YouTube hasn't said. For now it is limited to the US, India and Indonesia.

Final thoughts

The $20 payout test is good news for small monetized channels in three countries, mainly because they can get paid every month instead of every few months. If you aren't in it, nothing changes yet. Either way, earning more still comes down to watch time from real viewers, so put your effort, and any panel budget, behind videos that already hold attention.
